1. What inspired you to start writing/creating art, and how has that inspiration evolved over time?

  • My father was a writer and so at the start I really just tried to mimic him. I typed out my first novel on an old typewriter he gave me. It was about my toy dragons, so I guess I was always destined to write SciFi.

2. Can you share the story behind your latest work? What was your creative process like?

  • Funnily enough it's about dragons. The story had been brewing inside me for a long time and in the end I felt I just had to write it, whether or not anybody would want to read it. It just poured out and Dragons of Dunmoray was born.

3. What advice would you give to aspiring authors who are just starting their journey?

  • Stop procrastinating and start writing. Write the story that's in your heart. Write the story that you would like to read. Especially if it's one you can't already find on the shelves.

4.  What role has self-publishing or independent production played in your career, and what have you learned from the process?

  • I've found self publishing really liberating. I'm not tied to any timescales other than those I set, and the whole creative process and learning new skills is great fun. All I really need to do now is crack the dark art of marketing.

5.  How do you connect with your audience, and what has been your favorite moment of reader or viewer feedback?

  • I love meeting people face to face so I try to meet up with other writers at festivals or author events. Not so easy when you live out in the sticks as I do. But I do my best. Other than that it's social media, but I do prefer the in person approach.

6. How do you handle challenges like writer's block or creative burnout, and what motivates you to keep going?

  • Running. Whenever I hit a wall or get stuck I go for a fun. It's a great way to let your mind unpack. I have my best ideas when I'm pounding the hills!

7. What’s next for you? Can you share any upcoming projects or future creative goals you’re excited about?

  • I like blending genres. At the moment I'm playing around with a bit of crime, but it's crime with a twist. I won't say any more about it at this stage. But in the self publishing space, over the next couple of years I will be releasing two more SciFi novels. The first will be a technothriller and the second will be a post apocalyptic CliFi novel.

8. How has your personal life or experiences influenced your writing/art, and are there any particular moments that stand out?

  • My career as a marine scientist definitely influences my writing. A lot of my work had a maritime theme. Even in Dragons or Dunmoray you won't get away without a bit of science and a ship!
